Samtse College of Education launched its Master of Education (M.Ed) in Science and Mathematics on 26th July 2017 which will be led by Dr. Nandu Giri, Professor in Chemistry. This is a two year full-time programme made up of 12 modules and a dissertation. The programme aims to enhance both the subject knowledge and the pedagogical competencies of the learners, as well as inculcating research, critical thinking analysis and investigative work skills through various avenues. Fourty students who are teaching sciences and mathematics in various government schools across the country have been enrolled based on their merit.
The M.Ed programme is introduced with the belief that "the quality of science and maths education is key to national development and the quality of science and maths teaching therefore is really important for the education system particularly in our school system" according to President of the college Dr. Dorji Thinley who was the guest of honour during the launch. The idea of introducing this M.Ed programme was conceived in 2007. The findings from the needs analysis carried out by the college showed that there is a need for teachers to improve their content and pedagogical competencies along with research skills to address classroom shortcomings and to carry out informed teaching. Dorji Norbu, one of the students said "I am very excited to be a part of this historic moment because this is the first ever M.Ed programme being offered by the college. The programme looks very interesting and relevant for us because it is quite unique from the M.Ed programme offered in other countries".
The college is working on M.Ed programmes in English and Social Studies.
